Focus Forward

The Latest Word from John Ed Mathison

In life it is always important for us to keep our focus forward. It is easy to look back and live in the past. It is far more productive to look forward and live for the future.

A New York University professor by the name of Wafaa Bilal has had a digital camera implanted in the back of his head. This camera takes a still image every minute. It will provide a good visual record of every place that Dr. Bilal has been.

When quizzed about having this unusual surgery to implant this digital camera, he says that he just wanted to see what it would be like to have eyes in the back of his head. He did indicate that he did not expect it to be that painful, but it was extremely painful. He said that he if he had known how much it would hurt, he probably wouldn’t have done it.

I don’t want to spend my time seeing where I have been. I want to look forward to where God is leading me.

When driving a car it always easy to spend too much time looking in the rear view mirror. If we drive through life looking in the rear view mirror, we are going to have a lot of wrecks and run into a lot of objects.

The front windshield on my car is about fifty times larger than the rear view mirror. I am going to make a covenant to spend more time looking forward and less time looking back.

I am not going to get a digital camera implanted in front or back of my head – and I don’t recommend an implant for you either. God has already given us a mind to visualize what He sees for us for the future.

Remember Paul’s great words to the Philippians, “I am going to forget the things which are past, reach for the things in the future, and press on towards the prize of God’s purpose for my life.” Philippians 3: 13, 14

I am sure I am not nearly as smart as a New York University professor, but I am smart enough to know that spending my major time looking forward is a lot better than taking a picture every minute of where I have been.
