Lest We Forget – Our Heritage Part 1 of 3

The Latest Word from John Ed Mathison

It’s easy to forget when God removes us from a very tough situation and allows us to live with many, many blessings. When we’re on our backs, we cry out for help. When we stand tall on our feet, we tend to forget who it is that put us there. We need to remember that turtle sitting on a fence post – he didn’t get there by himself! Don’t forget.

God’s people were reminded early that they were “living in cities they did not build, drinking from wells they did not dig, eating from vineyards they did not plant.” Then this warning – “Be careful, lest you forget the Lord who brought you from the land of Egypt out of a house of slavery.” (Deuteronomy 6:10-12)

Be careful – lest we forget. I’m writing a series of 3 blogs on this topic of “Lest we forget” and focusing on 3 areas which we must remember! Paul often said, “Let me remind you.” To paraphrase Samuel Johnson, “Sometimes we don’t need to learn something new, we just need to be reminded of what we ought to know.”

Lest we forget – Our HERITAGE. The first 2 colonies established in America made it clear that they were being established for “the glory of God and the propagation of the Christian faith.” Our forefathers knew that only God could direct the building of this Nation. Benjamin Franklin said, “If a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without God’s notice, is it probable that an empire could rise without his aid?”

Our forefathers recognized the importance of the Bible and following its principles. There was a close connection between the early leaders of this country and the American Bible Society. In the early history of our Nation teaching the Bible was required in all schools – and the government paid for the Bibles!”

Today, be careful, lest we forget – Our HERITAGE. Look how it has become acceptable to eliminate the importance of the Bible. Teaching the Bible in schools is no longer required, and references to it get people in trouble. At some military bases the Bible has been removed from the “missing man” table that is a memorial to POW-MIA’s indicating that the missing in action and the fallen have a place at the table. GQ Magazine carried an article listing “21 Books You Don’t Have To Read” – and the Bible is on that list.

Be careful, lest we forget – Our HERITAGE. There’s still an effort today to remove, “Under God” from our Pledge of Allegiance and “In God We Trust” from our money. After 9-11 baseball stadiums quit singing, “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” at the 7th inning stretch and starting singing “God Bless America.” Recently several baseball stadiums have quit singing “God Bless America.” Recently the House of Representatives dropped the phrase, “So help me God” when swearing in a person for testimony.

I’ve written a little book titled, “Where is America Headed?” in which I treat this topic in expanded form. It can be ordered from our ministry office (4131 Carmichael Road, Montgomery, AL 36106) for $10 (which includes postage). It was written to be a resource to remind us, lest we forget, and to motivate us to spend time talking to our kids, grandkids, friends, co-workers, etc. about our country and what we’ve been, what we are, and where we’re going?

Be careful, lest we forget – Our HERITAGE.
