Let’s Sing!

LET’S SING!

My great musical talent has never been appreciated except by little children. As pastor of Frazer, they always cut my microphone off as soon as there might be a song in which I would join in singing. But we had a weekday kindergarten of over 400 4- and 5-year-olds. At chapel every Friday morning at 10 o’clock, they invited me to lead them in their favorite song – “My God Is So Big.”

I led that song every Friday morning for over 25 years. They sang “My God is so big – so strong and so mighty – there’s nothing my God cannot do!” It has motions with it. The kids throw up their arms and show their muscles about how big God is. The song goes on to talk about the mountains and the valleys, the stars and the heavens. It comes back to the last reprise that repeats, “My God is so big – so strong and so mighty – there’s nothing my God cannot do!” Most anyone in Alabama who was listening about 10:05 a.m. could have heard them bellow out that affirmation!!

Today, I will see people in public in their 20s-30s, and I love it when they throw up their arms showing how great God is! But that’s not just a children’s song. It’s a song for each of us in 2020. Our God is so very, very big!

My good friend, Coach Chanda Rigby, head women’s basketball coach at Troy University, started 2020 off right for me when she quoted a passage from Isaiah 43. That chapter begins by reminding the people that God had miraculously delivered them by making a way through the waters and a dry path through the sea. He had caused all the chariots of the Egyptians to be covered beneath the wave. He said that their lives were snuffed out like a smoldering candlewick. (v.17)

But then comes these amazing words, “Forget all of that – it’s nothing compared to what I am going to do – for I am about to do a brand new thing.” (v.18) Did you really hear that? Future accomplishments will be greater than past experiences!! Wow!

Take a minute to think of the great things that God has done in your life. Now, forget all of that – He’s about to do something even greater! (Tweet this!) What does that mean for you in 2020?

My prayer is that in 2020, we will not be problem-focused people but possibility-focused people. Focus on what God’s power can do. Nothing is impossible with Him! He can redefine the possible. Some people continue living today allowing the past to define what they’re doing in the present and the future. God has a new possibility for every person!

Don’t focus on your problems in 2020 – focus on how big your God is. We oftentimes like to go to God and tell him how big our problem is – we need to tell our problem how big our God is!!

Remember – forget all those great things that He has done for you in the past – it is nothing compared to what He is going to do! (v.18) Do you hear and receive that?

I don’t want to lead a song about how big God is just for little children. I want to be led and lead everybody in the new song God is singing in 2020. Hand me a mic and start the new song!
