ONE NAME TO KNOW
Etched in the black granite wall of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial are the names of 58,156 Americans who died in that war. A visit to the memorial can be very emotional for veterans, family members, and tourists. Many people are looking for a specific name, perhaps a parent, a spouse, a child, a friend, or a cousin. Many people use their fingers to trace the names of family members or special friends.
Three Vietnam veterans – Robert Bedker, Willard Craig, and Darrall Lausch – are three very unique names. These three men can walk up to that big black granite wall and find their names carved in stone. Each of them was incorrectly listed as killed in action because of data coding errors.
They are alive, even though their names are listed as being dead. Where is your name listed? The most important place is to be sure that it’s listed in the Lamb’s Book of Life. If it’s there, you can be assured of life now and life forever. “But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s book of life.” (Revelation 21:27)
One of the memorable battles of history was fought in Greece at Thermopylae. 300 Spartans died but gallantly held off a vast Persian army for many days. Because of their bravery, school children in Greece are required to memorize the names of the 300 who perished there. They have to be able to write and recite all the names.
The greatest battle was fought on Good Friday. What the world thought was a defeat, God knew that even though it was Friday, Sunday was coming. It was there that one Man won the victory so that all of us might have life now and life eternal. Christians have only one name to know.
That name is Jesus.
“There is salvation in no one else! God has given no other name under heaven by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12) There is only one name – Jesus.
Jesus is the name that is above every name. That name is a shield against every foe, and it is a source of abiding joy and purpose in life. Jesus is the only guarantee of everlasting life in heaven. The old gospel song says, “Take the name of Jesus with you.” It is the “hope of earth and joy of heaven.” Be sure you know the One who bears that name!
To paraphrase Watchman Nee: “Without Jesus, I am a sinner – with Jesus, I am saved. Without Jesus, I am empty – with Jesus, I am full. Without Jesus, I am weak – with Jesus, I am strong. Without Jesus, I cannot – with Jesus, I am more than able. Without Jesus, I have been defeated – with Jesus, I am already victorious.”
Lift high the name of Jesus. Declare with Paul that, “God has bestowed on him the name that is above every name; that at the name of Jesus every knee shall bow in heaven and on earth and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord for the glory of God the Father.” (Philippians 2: 9-11)
The Lamb’s Book of Life will not have people listed incorrectly because of data coding errors. If you confess your sin, ask for God’s forgiveness, trust Jesus to live in your heart, and follow Him, then there will be no mistake where your name will be recorded.
Where is your name recorded?
